JOB SUMMARY: Responsible for the enforcement of the laws of the United States of America, the State of Kansas and Allen County. Under the direct supervision of the Sheriff, Undersheriff, or front-line supervisor, this non-exempt position performs tasks involving maintaining order and protecting life and property by enforcing local, state, or federal laws and ordinances. Performs a combination of the following duties: patrols within the limits of Allen County, directs traffic, issues traffic summonses, investigates accidents, apprehends and arrests suspects, serves legal processes of courts, appears in court to testify on cases, and assists with guarding and transporting inmates. Interacts with community members to provide information in response to inquiries about services and to handle and resolve any issues while delivering the highest level of customer service to Allen County, the community and other departments or agencies. Follows policies and procedures in carrying out their assignment.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Reports for duty at the time and place designated.
- Maintains a professional appearance whether uniform or plainclothes assignment.
- Maintains and carries weapons and equipment as authorized in position and as qualified.
- Attend and complete all required training and demonstrations of proficiency.
- Maintains constant professional contact with Emergency Communications at all times and advises the dispatcher when taking a break, out of service, etc. for officer safety.
- Maintains professional conduct and is an example to the public, and maintains positive working relations with the public, schools, attorneys, the courts, and other law enforcement agencies.
- Provides assistance to the public to include but not limited to times of disaster, such as snowstorms, fire, floods and tornadoes.
- Assists motorists, conducts other facets of proactive service.
- Makes community policing efforts in respect to businesses and personal or professional relationships.
- Offers public information classes as necessary.
- Enforce federal and state laws, county ordinances, and other applicable ordinances. Use force in accordance with department use of force policy and only when necessary to effect a lawful arrest.
- Patrol in Allen County to serve as a deterrent to crime and to detect suspected criminal and traffic violations.
- Observe and monitor traffic activity and investigate safety violations or criminal activity involving the transportation of controlled substances, illegal firearms, stolen property, etc.
- Enforces traffic laws through warnings, citations, and when necessary, apprehend individuals related to traffic violations.
- Complete vehicle inspections.
- Investigate complaints of criminal activity, property damage, domestic disputes, and other complaints to determine extent of damage and/or violations, and to identify possible or alleged suspects.
- Interview victims, witnesses, and suspects to obtain information about criminal investigations.
- Advise all suspects of their rights as required by law. Provides equal protection for all.
- Complete detailed and accurate reports, and other paperwork, required for traffic and criminal investigations, in a timely manner.
- Complete detailed and accurate affidavits and subsequently serve warrants.
- Provide for accurate and legal collection, storage, and accounting of all evidence, and proper release of evidence when authorized.
- Serve as a witness in court hearings.
- Serve civil processes.
- Transport inmates from jail to court, guard those inmates while in court, and provide additional in- and out-of-county transport as directed.
SECONDARY FUNCTIONS:
- May be assigned to assist in the detention of inmates at the jail.
- May be assigned special duty as a firearms trainer for all certified officers.
- May be assigned special duty as field officer trainer for new officers
- May be assigned special duty as an evidence custodian.
- May be assigned special duty with drug enforcement.
- May be assigned special duty to maintain public communication and information via social media, web pages, and other public communication tools.
- May be assigned special duty by the Sheriff for the benefit of the department.
- Performs other related duties as required.
SUPERVISORY FUNCTIONS: None.
CERTIFICATIONS, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS:
- Must obtain and maintain Kansas Law Enforcement Training Center certification.
- Valid Driver's License.
- CPR certification.
- Certification in first aid.
- Must be 21 years old.
- Drug Screening, and subject to random drug testing.
- Range certified.
- Biased Based Policing.
- Intoxilyzer 9000 Training.
- TASER Certified.
REQUIRED EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE: High school education or G.E.D
