Jail Maintenance Supervisor (Rice County Detention Center)

SUMMARY:
Under the supervision of the Jail Captain, the Jail Maintenance Supervisor is a nonexempt position under the FLSA that takes care of the needs of the building and the property. The Jail Maintenance Supervisor is responsible for all maintenance and upkeep of the facility, both interior and exterior and equipment. The employee in this position is responsible for all preventive maintenance and general upkeep and repairs. He/she will oversee all custodial duties throughout the entire facility. Work also involves enforcing all federal, state, and local laws and ordinances, and making preliminary investigations at the scene of a crime. Work in this position involves an element of personal danger. The employee in this position must be able to act without direct supervision and to exercise independent judgment in crisis situations.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:
1-2 inmates to formulate a work detail to assist in general upkeep and cleaning of the facility.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- To keep the facility in proper functioning and appearance order; including, but not limited to lock maintenance, door operation, security systems, cameras, fencing, plumbing, electrical, water, sewer, natural gas, glass, paint and flooring needs.
- Responsible for oversight of kitchen equipment and supplies (other than food items)
- Responsible for maintenance and testing of fire suppression systems.
- Inventory control of the Tool Room and all tools owned by the facility.
- Oversight of all maintenance contracts, responding trash from containers, sweeping, mopping, and waxing floors, cleaning of glass, sweeping of front and side walks, emptying of smoking receptacles.
- Exterior responsibilities include snow removal, lawn maintenance, tree and shrub care, and parking lot upkeep.
- Minor vehicle maintenance, washing, and waxing.
- Other related duties as deemed necessary or as required.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITY:
- Familiar with general maintenance practices.
- Basic knowledge of plumbing, electricity, water, and sewer operations.
- Familiar with fire suppression systems.
- Basic locksmith skills.
- Knowledge of office policies and procedures, state, and federal regulations.
- Knowledge of law enforcement procedures, computer applications, and protocol.
- Knowledge of law enforcement techniques, federal, state, and local laws, and ordinances.
- Ability to operate emergency vehicles, radios, fingerprinting equipment, video equipment, computers, and other related law enforcement equipment.
- Ability to concentrate on more than one task at one time, ability to work under stressful situations.
- Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
- Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
- Ability to speak effectively.
- Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.
- Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
- Ability to self-initiate and complete maintenance tasks as directed by the jail captain.
EXPERIENCE and/or EDUCATION:
High school diploma or general education degree (GED); or one to three months related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS:
- Kansas Driver's License
- Must be 18 years of age or older
- No Felony or serious misdemeanor convictions
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand and talk or hear. The employee frequently is required to walk and taste or smell. The employee is required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
The noise level in the work environment is usually loud and can be extremely stressful. The working environment can be extremely hazardous and dangerous where extreme physical activity may arise in the control, transport, and containment of criminals and inmates.
