Detention Officer (Rice County Detention Center)

SUMMARY:
Under the supervision of the Detention Supervisor, the Detention Officer I is a nonexempt position under the FLSA that takes care of the needs of the inmates in the jail. The Detention Officer I records all activities of inmates. The employee in this position is responsible for recording all requests of inmates, medical problems, medications, etc. It is the responsibility of this employee to ensure that inmates are maintained in a humane manner and ensures that the inmates are granted their constitutional rights. Works also involves enforcing all laws and rules inside the jail. Work in this position involves an element of personal danger. The employee in this position must be able to act without direct supervision and to exercise independent judgment in crisis situations.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Processes inmates upon arrival and release from detention; records all activities of inmates, including phone calls and medical needs; checks prisoners on an hourly basis; dispenses commissary needs, clothing, personal hygiene products.
- Meets the public at the detention center and supervises visiting hours.
- Monitors medical status of prisoners; dispenses medications and notifies physician of medical needs.
- Maintains the Jail (inside, outside, yard, etc.).
- Transports prisoners to court, medical or other facilities, completes reports and records.
- Administers alcohol testing and drug screens when necessary.
- Transports juveniles in custody.
- Fingerprints suspects as well as the public.
- Testifies in court on related activities.
- Receives and answers complaints and request from the general public.
- Performs general law enforcement duties in the protection of life and property.
- Maintains mechanical equipment in the jail.
- Other related duties as deemed necessary or as required.
MARGINAL FUNCTIONS:
- Assist with security of other facilities such as the Courthouse.
- May be called on to assist deputies in the field during major events.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITY:
- Knowledge of office policies and procedures, state and federal regulations.
- Knowledge of law enforcement communication procedures, computer applications, and protocol.
- Knowledge of psychology, sociology, and/or criminal justice.
- Knowledge of law enforcement techniques, federal, state, and local laws and ordinances.
- Ability to operate emergency vehicles, radios, firearms, fingerprinting equipment, video equipment, computers, and other related law enforcement equipment.
- Thorough knowledge of emergency medical procedures and the ability to communicate in emergency and stressful situations, provide clear and concise instructions, excellent listening skills, ability to calm down callers, obtain valuable information and provide information.
- Ability to concentrate on more than one task at one time, ability to work under stressful situations.
- Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operation and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
- Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
- Ability to speak effectively.
- Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.
- Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
EXPERIENCE and/or EDUCATION:
High school diploma or general education degree (GED); or one to three months related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS:
- Must be 18 years of age
- Valid Kansas Driver's License
- No felony convictions
- Be able to pass a physical examination and drug test
- Pepper spray use (We will provide the training if not certified)
- CPR (We will provide the training if not certified)
- Taser (We will provide the training if not certified)
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand and talk or hear. The employee frequently is required to walk and taste or smell. The employee is occasionally required to use hand to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 10 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
The noise level in the work environment is usually loud and can be extremely stressful. The working environment can be extremely hazardous and dangerous where extreme physical activity may arise in the control, transport, and containment of criminals and inmates.
