Position Type: Unclassified (At-Will), Full-Time, Exempt, Benefits-Eligible Position

Location: Wichita, Kansas

Comp Rate: $65,000.00 to $75,000.00


The Kansas Commission on Peace Officers' Standards and Training (KSCPOST) seeks to fill an attorney (Legal Counsel) position.KSCPOST is committed to providing the citizens of Kansas with qualified, trained, ethical, competent, and professional peace officers. It is also dedicated to adopting and enforcing professional standards for certification (licensing) of peace officers to promote public safety and preserve public trust and confidence.

One method the Commission uses to meet our obligation to Kansas law enforcement and the citizens of Kansas is to review and take disciplinary action against the certifications of officers who violate the Kansas Law Enforcement Training Act (K.S.A. 74-5601 et seq.) and related Kansas Administrative Regulations. Legal counsel manages the disciplinary actions of the agency and advises on issues regarding compliance with the law.

PRIMARY DUTIES

• Agency enforcement of violations of the Kansas Law Enforcement Training Act (K.S.A. 74- 5601 et seq.) and related Kansas Administrative Regulations.

• Preparation and/or review of administrative orders, subpoenas, correspondence, email, contracts, administrative regulations and other documents necessary to agency operations.

• Respond to requests made under the Kansas Open Meetings Act (KOMA) and Kansas  Open Records Act (KORA).

• Assist with miscellaneous projects and provide internal agency advice as needed.

• Perform other duties as assigned by the Executive Director.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

• Graduate of an accredited law school.

• Current license (in good standing) to practice law in the State of Kansas.

• Minimum of three (3) years experience in administrative law, open records/meetings law, and/or civil litigation.

• A valid driver's license (minimal travel may be required).

KANSAS TAX CLEARANCE CERTIFICATE: Each applicant applying for a State of Kansas job vacancy must obtain a valid Kansas Certificate of Tax Clearance by accessing the Kansas Department of Revenue website at http://www.ksrevenue.org/taxclearance.html.

A Tax Clearance is a comprehensive tax account review to determine and ensure that an individual's account is compliant with all primary Kansas Tax Laws. A Tax Clearance expires every 90 days. All applicants, including current state employees, are responsible for submitting a valid certificate with all other application materials to the hiring agency.
